Embedded Systems Software Developer

June 2019 • Carlsbad, CA

What I liked

I worked with an awesome and supportive team, and by the end of the summer they viewed me as an equal. Not only would they help me solve problems I was working on, they also came to me for advice when they came up against challenges. Good exposure to working with one small team as part of a very large project.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to work on lower-level firmware/FPGA embedded systems, but the software I was working on was running on embedded Linux and used a lot of high-level features of C++.

Advice

Complex systems have a lot of interconnected parts, and software to deal with all that complexity can be pretty monstrous. Make sure you understand all the moving parts of the whole system to avoid losing the forest in the trees.

Software Engineering Co-Op

June - August 2019 • Rockford, IL

What I liked

Excellent company to intern with as an Electrical Engineering student. The company has plenty of positions pertaining to this degree that they are looking to fill with interns. I had priority choice over what sub-field of Electrical Engineering I wanted to explore. The pay is also extremely competitive with that of typical college interns/coops.

What I wish was different

The company's on boarding process has been in a state of flux up until recently. My start date was delayed causing me to lose out on 2 weeks of pay.

Advice

I'd highly recommend applying to Collins Aerospace as an engineering major, especially for electrical engineering students. EE interns make up 10% of the intern population, but EE intensive work makes up 50% of the available positions.

Software/Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

The company takes great care of their employees, especially their interns. They give you real work as an intern and empower you to grow in your role. My manager was incredible. He always helped point me in the right direction and truly took the time to listen to any of my concerns. Work was technical and difficult but there were may team bonding/company events (that occurred during workday and were paid) that helped and made work days more fun.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunities you get once you are in an internship/co-op role. I was asked about participating in multiple different projects over the course of the summer. Each were very different from each other and that helped me see different areas that I may be interested in learning more about/pursing a full time role in.

Strategic Business Analysis Planning Intern

May - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I liked getting exposure to different aspects of the business that you don't see or learn about in class.

I wish I had more access to analytics platforms and applications to learn more and test my skills. As an intern, my access was limited.

Advice

Work hard, and make connections. They don't need to be strictly business connections, but instead, make friends with everyone in the office.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Everett, WA

What I liked

Great team environment, able to work on a variety of projects that were different than what I was exposed to.

What I wish was different

Having more upfront set - up when I arrived (e.g. system access, passwords).

Advice

Do not be afraid to fail and ask questions. As an intern you of course should provide quality work but you should also not be afraid to take on new projects that you are not familiar with. At the end of the day, it is your career. Figure out what you enjoy.

May 2018 • Danbury, CT

What I liked

Opportunity to explore departments within the building, availability for co-ops to obtain meaningful and challenging work, and frequency of company/co-op social events.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be ambitious; if you are willing to go out of your way to find work in other departments, other employees are usually more than willing to help you. This is a perfect way to find out more about each of the departments and how they intertwine.

The internship experience is incredibly valuable - interns have the opportunity to work directly on projects side by side with Lead Engineers.
