Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Growing my knowledge and surrounding myself with incredibly capable engineers to work with and ask for help.

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't have to come back for this final semester. Washington is way nicer than SF.

Advice

Just apply. Everyone is so lazy or scared of rejection that they'll end up applying to a few dozen places and talk about how hard it is or how much effort they put in. I put my job applications on a spreadsheet to keep track and to get my first internship I applied to 600 places. My experience is not unique. Just apply and keep applying and keep fixing your resume and keep applying.

Operations Program Manager Intern

July - September 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

The abundance of support from colleagues and resources for personal development, improving skills and becoming a great team player. Interns are taken seriously and are given relevant, hands on projects. Work-life balance is great.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I am very happy with my experience.

Advice

Do not let impostor's syndrome affect how you work or your work quality. When in doubt, always ask for clarity, direction and feedback as early as possible so you do not feel like you have to scramble things together at the end of your internship or your project. Also, a great advice my mentor gave me is to not overpromise and underachieve, instead, to under-promise and overachieve.

Product Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I love the company, i loved the division I was in. Seattle was AMAZING in the summer. All of their internship benefits are incredibly generous. I had an amazing Manager that I learned so much from.

What I wish was different

The recruiting process for Microsoft is complex and usually takes a long time. Recruiters change frequently and it is hard to know who to reach out to. Your experience is directly tied to what team you get assigned to as well as who your manager is.

Advice

Highly recommend!! You are getting an amazing hands on career experience in a beautiful city while being paid. This is amazing. Both explorer and regular internships are a wonderful experience.

Program Manager and Software Developer

May - August 2019 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

The experience gave me great insight as to what it was like working on a team in the tech industry from beginning to end of a product cycle. The mentors were also very helpful and it was a very encouraging learning environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that my project had been more of what I was interested in, but it was still good experience.

Advice

That it is a very open-ended program that I was in, and it is for those who are willing to learn quickly, learn to communicate well and be willing to fail

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

It was a great experience in a brand new location. It has a smaller team feel with the backing of a large and global organization. I honestly had just as great a time in Raleigh as I did in Redmond.

What I wish was different

I wish I knew others in the Raleigh area before going in.

Advice

I would say be brave and apply to here or in Redmond. I had a great time at all Microsoft internships.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

What I wish was different

There was no team matching of any sort -- the org that the team that interviews you belongs to, is the org you will be under, regardless of how good a fit it is.

Explore Intern

June - September 2019 • Bellevue, WA

Explorer Intern

May - August 2019 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

My project was extremely fun and interesting! Everyone in my team was very patient and always willing to answer my questions. My peers were amazing and it was really fun working with them! We also had a lot of fun participating in the intern events Microsoft organized throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

Advice

For the application process: Apply early! By October a lot of people have already received their interview results or are almost done with the process. Also be honest in your interviews, I feel your personality is as important (or maybe more) as your skills. For the actual internship: Get out of your comfort zone! Talk to as many people as possible and try new things, use this opportunity to learn about different positions and teams.
