Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with. I was on a small team working on a full-stack application with technologies that I had never used before. My team members were always looking to support/encourage me with the task and were always willing to extend a helping hand. The project I was working on turned out to be an extremely useful web application for the team and I had a great experience launching the app and then brainstorming future applications for it.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a more set structure to the internship. I expected there to be a set project for me coming in but I was met with the challenge of there not really being any structure at all to the internship. The internship was completely up to me and what I wanted to make of it. This resulted in a lot of self-initiative, which isn't bad in itself but it was not what I was expecting.

Advice

I would recommend that you really take the time to get to know the people you work with. They all have extensive backgrounds, are usually very willing to talk/help out, and can share invaluable experiences about what they went through to get to where they are. Specifically for me, I spent a lot of time asking about what life was like as a software developer at Northrop Grumman.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

Role allowed me to utilize and expand on knowledge gained from my classes in new and exciting ways. The internship program gave a good overview of the company as a whole, and opportunities within the company both during and after the internship was complete. Coworkers were very nice and easy to work with.

What I wish was different

As a co-op/internship, I wish I had gotten experience at a company that was more different from the company that I worked for previously, as I believe it would have rounded out my education better.

Advice

Be sure to advocate for what kind of assignments or work you would like to complete.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

Nice office, interesting projects to work on.

What I wish was different

There was not a lot of technical work to be done at first, and the internship experience itself was not as polished as you might expect at other locations hosting interns at different companies. I did not learn as much as I'd expect, and used a lot of the knowledge I had already.

Advice

Learn as much as you can while you can!

Communications Intern

May - August 2019 • Dulles, VA

What I liked

Northrop Grumman is a very fast paced corporation with many high-profile clients. It was cool to be able to work on projects that I knew were impacting the world in a real and tangible way. It is also a very female friendly environment, especially for being in the aerospace and defense industry. They are also extremely flexible and work with you to make sure your schedule and hours work for you.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is I wish I had a internship-long project that I could’ve worked on so that I could not only have something to present to managers and above to gain that exposure, but also to have something to show future employers what I created.

Advice

Connect with other interns as soon as you can! I didn’t have any others in my department, so I made sure to go to the networking and intern events that the company had set up for us, and I met some really great people from many different schools.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Ogden, UT

What I liked

I loved being able to get a feel for working in industry. Northrop is large corporation and this was my first experience working in such an environment. The managers and mentors really helped me feel at home and useful in the work environment. Northrop Grumman is an expressive company and I would recommend it to anyone looking to venture into the defense industry.

What I wish was different

Advice

There is quite a bit of paperwork to fill out, but eventually you come out on top. At first there are a lot of acronyms and lingo to try and learn. Don’t fret it just keep on learning.

College Technical Intern

May - August 2019 • Dulles, VA

What I liked

The coworkers were very helpful and fun to be around. I was given a good mix of easier tasks that helped my coworkers save time, as well as some harder material that I was taken step-by-step through. I learned a lot about what office life is like, and I learned concepts that are very relevant to my major through shadowing and testing.

What I wish was different

It took a little while to get started because of all the training and equipment necessary for me to start working, but I was able to engage with the coworkers and start learning even at the beginning.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and get to know the other employees. Find out what they like and dislike about the company and their role, and make sure you're always looking to be helpful in whatever capacity you can.

What I liked

I enjoyed the help I received from my coworkers during my experience as well as the intern events that were organized by the intern council.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get more lab experience, although this was my fault since I delayed my lab safety training so I could not be in the lab until late in my internship.

Advice

Be prepared to expose yourself to new topics and tasks, there are skills you learn in the workplace that are not necessarily taught in school.

Test engineer

April 1998 • Promontory, UT

What I liked

I finished my degree while working for this company. They have me this position because of my experience and the degree. I am grateful for that.

What I wish was different

In my education experience, I wish I could have finished the EE degree that I had previously started. I wish they would allow more flexibility in the engineering programs.

Advice

Get your education! Better to do it while you are young, but it's never too late.
