DEVELOPMENT TEST ENGINEER, FLUIDS/MECHANICAL SYSTEMS
The Texas Development Test team is based at the SpaceX Rocket Development Facility in McGregor, TX and tackles wide-ranging and exciting challenges in support of SpaceX launch vehicles, engines, and spacecraft. In addition to performing development, qualification, and acceptance testing on components for Starship, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Crew Dragon, and Starlink, the team is responsible for rapidly designing experiments to resolve flight-critical risks, issues, and anomalies. The Development Test Engineer role is highly multidisciplinary and this individual will be tasked with a wide variety of test equipment design and test execution efforts in support of the SpaceX mission. Team members are expected to operate quickly and autonomously while developing requirements, designing and fabricating test systems, conducting safe operations, reviewing data, and robustly automating testing and ground systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, build, modify, and troubleshoot fluid systems (low and high pressure gasses, cryogenics, hydraulics, and rocket propellants)
  • Design, build, and modify mechanical systems (small lugs, struts, and brackets to large welded/bolted structures)
  • Design, build, modify, and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems (sensors, electromechanical actuators, programmable controllers)
  • Work with vehicle responsible engineers to develop and execute tests from conception to completion, therein championing test article and test stand configuration, boundary condition definitions, development of fluid, electrical, and software schematics, and concepts of operation
  • Review data manually or using automated scripts
  • Provide daily direction and instruction to technicians to integrate test hardware and build test equipment
  • React to rapidly changing priorities, travel to other SpaceX locations, and work unusual schedules as necessary to accomplish project objectives
  • Apply critical thinking abilities alongside foundational engineering principles to address unusual problems. Thereafter, collaborate with diverse, multidisciplinary teams to bring ideated solutions to reality.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience developing and executing testing from conception to completion (internship experience qualifies)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated success in situations where multidisciplinary engineering skills were used to execute a design or project under technical/schedule pressure and where scope and definition were limited
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills or adapt to dynamic situations
  • Work experience with aerospace structural, mechanical, or propulsion systems assembly and testing
  • Demonstrated achievements where quick-thinking and problem solving played a critical role
  • Experience with design and operation of hazardous systems – cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, pyrophoric, high-pressure, etc.
  • Experience using electromechanical instrumentation and control hardware and software

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required; capability to lift up to 2 lbs unassisted
  • Physical effort including standing, lifting and carrying light weight such as materials or equipment
  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
  • Work occasionally performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
  • Some travel (up to 25%) required to other SpaceX locations; flexibility required
