Research Experiences and Internships at the National Energy Technology Laboratory

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) are seeking undergraduate and graduate students, along with recent bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral graduates, to participate in energy related research. To complement NETL’s mission, ORISE educational programs help ensure that NETL has a robust supply of scientists and engineers to meet its future science and technology needs. About the programs:


To engage in these critical areas, ORISE offers three programs designed for all academic levels:

  1. Professional Internship Program (PIP) - supports current undergraduate students, recent Bachelor's graduates, and current graduate students
  2. Postgraduate Research Program (PGRP) - supports recent Master's graduates and recent doctoral graduates
  3. Faculty Research Participation Program (FRP) - supports collaborations with faculty members

  • Three primary locations include: Albany, OR; Morgantown, WV; and Pittsburgh, PA. Some projects may support remote / off-site participation.
  • Participants receive a stipend based on education level and experience. 2022 stipend rates begin at $440/week - $678/week for undergraduates, $678/week - $1,025/week for graduate students, $3,650/month - $4,400/month for recent Master's graduates, and $5,387/month - $7,000/month for recent doctoral graduates.
  • Participants may be eligible to receive health insurance coverage or supplement, funds to support travel to site visits, conferences, and other appointment-related travel, relocation/moving assistance
  • Full-time and Part-time opportunities are available, depending on the needs of the research project and the availability of the selected participant
  • Duration of appointment varies based on the needs on the research project and the availability of the selected participant
