What I liked

I loved exploring the nearby area. San Jose and San Francisco have an amazing tech vibe. I also loved visiting California's many national parks and hiking there. The internship was fine and served its purpose of helping me determine where I want to go in CS.

What I wish was different

I wish I had received my own project to work on. I never felt like I contributed enough to the company.

Advice

Ask for more work. It is great experience and it gives you a lot to talk about during interviews.

Hardware Engineer (Supply Chain)

May 2017 - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

The people there were very sharp and extremely easy to work with. Everything I said was heard and considered, and I had lots of control to take my project where I thought it should go. The work environment was very open and casual and the offices were very modern. The hours were also flexible.

What I wish was different

I wish the orientation had been a bit shorter. There was around 6 days of formal orientation.

Advice

Make sure to set up meetings with people from different areas, including higher level managers. They love to talk to interns and it will be a great networking opportunity as well as a look into what the company's priorities are.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I loved the team I worked in. They supported me every step but also pushed me to try news things even if I didn't know them. It was a great environment to learn by doing and having the pace to make mistakes.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was that I got to work on a project with a group of interns.

Advice

My advice is to be as independent as possible. By that I mean have the ability to solve problems on your own. If you are stuck or encounter an issue always try to use your resources to figure it out yourself before you get help. It shows companies you are a problem solver.

Software Engineer Intern

What I liked

When people were asked why they choose to be at Cisco for many years, a common answer you would hear is that "we love the people we work with, the work culture is great!" After only 3 months at Cisco I felt the same way. The level of growth and resources you have are endless. They encourage you to be comfortable being uncomfortable . The intern events/program they have are engaging with activities filled for every week. They also inspire interns to network and have 1:1's often which I've learned to really love and benefit from. Most importantly, I've become a better programmer, had the experience to be a scrum master and lead meetings, develop products Cisco has put in production and used across many teams.

Advice

One piece of advice I'd like to share is that you can never let a day go by without learning something new. Whether it's from projects or coffee chats, you can meet new people, learn new tools and challenges companies face, and collaborate with one another. You only have 12 weeks, 12 weeks to find out if this is the place for you and if you're the right fit for them. Make each day count and you'll be happier knowing where you want to be in the future.

Business Analyst Intern

June - September 2017 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked how I was immediately thrown into the role and was considered a team member and got to lead 3 different project teams of my own. I also liked how many interns there were over summer so it was nice seeing other college students in the cafeteria.

What I wish was different

Within Cisco's internship program there are smaller programs that are department specific. Because there is a Business Analyst in every department, there is no program that is just for the Business Analysts so there were less events and you had to go more so out of your way to meet other interns.

Advice

I would say that you need to really take the opportunity to use the 'intern card' and try to meet as many people high up in the line of work that you see yourself doing.
