Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My internship experience with Cisco was amazing. I was working on full-stack web development and was able to create on my own Webex integration feature from start to finish. My team was young and majority female engineers, which is pretty rare for tech roles, and they constantly motivated me to succeed.

What I wish was different

It was a remote internship due to COVID, so I wish I was able to work in the San Jose office. I wasn't able to connect with other interns as much since I was the only intern on my team, and there weren't many opportunities to meet other students my age.

Advice

Be proactive and take initiative! Everyone at Cisco was more than willing to help me out if I ever had a problem or even tell me about their experiences at the company. Even though you are an intern, you can make a large impact on your team and the company.

Data Analyst Intern

What I liked

Even remote, Cisco over exceeded my expectations in every way possible. My boss gave me projects he knew I would enjoy and I was able to make a direct impact in just 12 weeks. Everyone who works at Cisco was so open to meeting me and were passionate about me getting the best experience possible.

What I wish was different

It wasn't remote :)

Advice

Try to meet as many people as possible!

STARS Junior Analyst

May - July 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved being able to meet with students from around the country to build models that implemented the data and software CISCO used on a day to day basis. It was great to learn about important financial models and how to properly analyze a mergers and acquisitions case.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more practice with the students and possibly get to know the students a bit better since we were just thrown into different groups. I would have loved to network more with the students from across the country.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience is to be open-minded with the people you meet and the group you have because, in the end, we all want to achieve the same thing.

Business Analyst Intern

June 2020 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I love the culture at Cisco and how dedicated the entire team was to ensure that the rest of the interns and I had the best experience we possibly could despite the internship being fully remote. I also appreciated the level of autonomy that the project managers gave to us as interns. They allowed us to take control of our projects while still being there to support us and help us overcome any obstacles along the way.

What I wish was different

To be honest, the only thing I would change about the internship would be to make it an in-person internship instead of remote (assuming COVID-19 wasn't happening).

Advice

Never feel hopeless or that you're too late to get an internship. I had begun my internship hunt in October of last year and didn't land this role until mid-March (after COVID-19 had put everyone into lockdown). The process of me getting this internship was also very abnormal. I had applied through referrals for other roles at Cisco and got rejected from them, but later received an email asking me to apply to this Business Analyst role. I decided to apply, immediately got an email to interview, and the rest is history :)

June - August 2020 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

The networking opportunities that were available were great even though the internship was virtual. I also enjoyed the intern project which gave us the opportunity to learn more about Cisco's business organizations and how they've been impacted throughout the years.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in person.

Advice

Use your time wisely. Leverage your connections to meet other Cisco employees. Create a bond with your intern group!

Staff Mechanical Engineer

May 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I love my team culture and the business that we run. The work and projects are never short on stock, and each project is always different. In my role, I have the opportunity to work with coworkers from other teams and functions in the company, I get to work with suppliers and manufacturers, traveling when needed but not required, and I get to work with customers. I really get a view of all aspects of a business.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done more, learned more, and been more exposed to all areas of the business, but it's physically impossible to be in more than once place at the same time, so with the limits of physics in mind, I don't wish anything to be different. My experience was actually perfect!

Advice

Keep talking to people, but be mindful of their time. Stay positive and have a serving heart, you're here to learn as much as you can, even for a short time.

Mechanical Engineer

July 2013 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Great team, great, manager, great culture. Multi-functional work, both independent and work with others. Well-connected community with lots of resources.

What I wish was different

Better young people culture. It is all mostly folks with families, ranging with kids in college to newborns. It's a very settled, go home after work culture.

Advice

Your work experience is how you make it. Your relationship with your teammates, your manager, mentors, and people you collaborate it, it's all about your attitude and what you bring to the table. Take ownership and manage yourself, your behavior and performance, and your success. If you don't like something, change it.

Network Engineer Co-Op

March 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the workplace environment and getting to meet new people. Everyone is very encouraging and willing to help you learn. I gained a huge amount of hands-on experience with routers, switches, and other devices.

What I wish was different

In the position I worked at, I was the only intern. I wish there were other interns as well because I think it would have been a fun experience getting to meet someone with the same interests as you and also getting to work and learn together.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like the share about this experience would be, take advantage of the resources that are given to you. Working at Cisco, there are so many different people that you meet every day and so much access to learning new things so it is important to make sure you talk and connect with people and try to go out of your way to get exposure to new things.
