What I liked

When people were asked why they choose to be at Cisco for many years, a common answer you would hear is that "we love the people we work with, the work culture is great!" After only 3 months at Cisco I felt the same way. The level of growth and resources you have are endless. They encourage you to be comfortable being uncomfortable . The intern events/program they have are engaging with activities filled for every week. They also inspire interns to network and have 1:1's often which I've learned to really love and benefit from. Most importantly, I've become a better programmer, had the experience to be a scrum master and lead meetings, develop products Cisco has put in production and used across many teams.

Advice

One piece of advice I'd like to share is that you can never let a day go by without learning something new. Whether it's from projects or coffee chats, you can meet new people, learn new tools and challenges companies face, and collaborate with one another. You only have 12 weeks, 12 weeks to find out if this is the place for you and if you're the right fit for them. Make each day count and you'll be happier knowing where you want to be in the future.

What I liked

I loved the team I worked in. They supported me every step but also pushed me to try news things even if I didn't know them. It was a great environment to learn by doing and having the pace to make mistakes.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was that I got to work on a project with a group of interns.

Advice

My advice is to be as independent as possible. By that I mean have the ability to solve problems on your own. If you are stuck or encounter an issue always try to use your resources to figure it out yourself before you get help. It shows companies you are a problem solver.

What I liked

I loved exploring the nearby area. San Jose and San Francisco have an amazing tech vibe. I also loved visiting California's many national parks and hiking there. The internship was fine and served its purpose of helping me determine where I want to go in CS.

What I wish was different

I wish I had received my own project to work on. I never felt like I contributed enough to the company.

Advice

Ask for more work. It is great experience and it gives you a lot to talk about during interviews.

Hardware Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Richfield, OH

What I liked

I liked the attempts made by the company to have interns interact and meet one another through Webex. I also really enjoyed the hands-on testing I did during my time in the office.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten to interact with more people in the group I was working with because I only had the chance to meet and work with a small handful of them.

Advice

Be ready to learn some things on your own because there's a lot that Cisco does that I was not taught about in school, like how Wi-Fi connects to switches, routers, and access points; how various network protocols work; and how to use TCP/IP connections to perform testing. So, don't be afraid to ask questions and spend time researching/watching YouTube videos with explanations of different topics. I was told by my supervisor that my internship's primary purpose was to be a learning experience for me.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company culture and the opportunities that I had to learn and grow my skills. I had mentors, worked on projects for the team, and delivered presentations to executives.

What I wish was different

I wish that this opportunity was not remote so that I could see the Cisco campus in San Jose, CA. However, because of COVID-19, that was not possible.

Advice

Be prepared to meet and make connections with amazing people at Cisco! Do not be afraid to share your ideas because people there will hear you and you will feel included!
