Cisco

Business Analyst

May - August 2017 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

A well-constructed intern program to introduce us to the overal operations and supply chain functions at Cisco. Interns were invited to join and participate with every amenity within the organization. There were plenty of professional development and social events. The provided housing was very close to the Cisco campus and of the highest quality or you could take the $6000 housing bonus.

What I wish was different

I was set into a role where there was no directly corresponding full-time role. Every other part of my internship was enjoyable; however, I was not given or denied a return offer. Instead, I am re-applying to a full-time role like all other aspiring employees.

Advice

During the interview process where you speak to your possible future manager, amke sure to ask that the business unit has a corresponding full-time role.

Operations Intern

May - October 2017 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

The intern program mirrors that of what you read in the news for tech interns at companies such as Google and Facebook. Cisco places tremendous value on individuals so you will always feel valued and they organize many exciting events as well. The location in Silicon Valley is an added bonus which allows you to travel to many popular areas around the state as well.

What I wish was different

Compensation for travel to San Jose.

Advice

Take advantage of all of the opportunities that are given to you with this company. They give you everything that you need to succeed and more.

Hardware Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Milpitas, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the inclusiveness of all the employees in the environment as well as how much all employees were willing to share their knowledge and take the interns under their wing.

What I wish was different

I wish I were able to do more! I was only able to learn so much in the short time frame of two months.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, because once you're a full-time employee, you'll get weird looks for asking certain questions, but as an intern, all questions are welcome and they're always answered! There's always someone willing to help.

Software engineering intern

May - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the collaboration and the layout of the different teams. I had both a mentor and a project lead to work with and could freely manage my own day to day schedule as long as I got my tasks done by their deadline.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to network with different departments since cisco has many buildings on their campus

Advice

Working at a companies headquarters definitely give you the best exposure and opportunities. Especially compared to interns at other locations I feel like I had a much better time out of San Jose.

Technical Sales Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Iselin, NJ

What I liked

I loved how hands on the internship was. I got to actually attend and present in meetings with real customers. I also received a lot of trainings on technology and sales. The best part was that I got to travel so much (San Jose, CA for the first week, traveling up and down the east coast for 8 weeks, and Raleigh, NC for the last week).

What I wish was different

Some interns had trouble connecting with their managers because the manager was either not based out of the same office or was too busy to have an intern. So, if the managers were better, I think the experience for the interns overall would be much better.

Advice

My one piece of advice is to network with as many Cisco employees and other interns as possible. These connections are amazing and helpful to become friends with some of the smartest and most successful people around. Also, get involved in as many assignments and projects as possible, and if you have some down time, always ask to find a stretch assignment and keep busy.

What I liked

I loved the work-life balance and everyone was soo very welcoming!

What I wish was different

The on-boarding process could have been better. There wasn't enough communication internally, which resulted in missing 2 out of 3 days of the awesome orientation at their headquarters in San Jose, California!

Advice

Go into the internship ready to learn and ask questions. They treat you very much like any other employee and expect quality work!

Field Sales Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

1. The team helps the sales team to engage customers with engineering service to run pre-sale trials. It was such an essential part of the business that it has been increasing the sales success rate a lot! 2. The people on the team were all amazing. 3. Remote working is very convenient at Cisco if you need to travel a lot.

What I wish was different

Overall it was great experience, and it would be even better if interns can travel to attend events at other offices.

Advice

Sales engineering is a field you want to look at if you like both doing business and staying in the loop of technologies.

Network Engineer Co-Op

March 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the workplace environment and getting to meet new people. Everyone is very encouraging and willing to help you learn. I gained a huge amount of hands-on experience with routers, switches, and other devices.

What I wish was different

In the position I worked at, I was the only intern. I wish there were other interns as well because I think it would have been a fun experience getting to meet someone with the same interests as you and also getting to work and learn together.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like the share about this experience would be, take advantage of the resources that are given to you. Working at Cisco, there are so many different people that you meet every day and so much access to learning new things so it is important to make sure you talk and connect with people and try to go out of your way to get exposure to new things.
